The best curly hair routine: step-by-step

1. Deep clean

Okay, so the first step in any curly hair routine is to get your hair squeaky clean. Curly hair really doesn’t need to be washed every couple of days; we recommend picking a day of the week when you have the time to go through the entire process (#selfcaresunday anyone?).

For this, you can’t go past the Evo Springsclean Deep Clean Rinse. Formulated to remove build-up, dirt and excess oil without stripping any moisture from your hair, this rinse is for when your hair is dirty, like ~really~ dirty. Oh, and it reduces frizz and prepares your curls for easier styling. So toss out your shampoo, you don’t need it anymore.

How to use:

  • Wet your hair and apply the Deep Clean Rinse directly to your scalp section-by-section.
  • Massage thoroughly, then rinse.
  • For best results, repeat the process.

When to deep cleanse your hair:

Use once a week or whenever your hair is super dirty.

2. Co-wash

What would a curly hair routine be without a conditioner, and the Evo Heads Will Roll Co-wash no less! This co-wash is a low-foam, cleansing conditioner that gently cleanses and conditions your hair in one step. It doesn’t weigh your hair down, it hydrates your curls and supports your natural curl shape and pattern.

How you do this step and the first step will depend on what state your hair is currently in, or what day of the week it is. If it’s your hair wash day, we recommend doing a deep cleanse first and then using this co-wash afterwards. But, if it’s a few days after your deep cleanse but you need a little refresh, you can totally use this conditioner again.

How to use:

  • Wet your hair and apply a generous amount into the scalp and work through the hair.
  • To distribute it evenly, use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to brush it through your hair.
  • Rinse! Repeat if necessary.

When to use the co-wash:

You can use the co-wash whenever as a conditioner after your deep clean, or on the days when you want to clean your hair but don’t want to commit to a deep clean.

3. Curl treatment

Among all the hair types, curly hair is probably one of the driest. Which is why you need to regularly give it some TLC in the form of hair treatments. So next up in your curly hair routine is the Evo Baby Got Bounce Curl Treatment.

Like a tall glass of water, this curl treatment is going to give your hair some major hydration and moisture. It’ll leave your hair soft, manageable and gorgeous.

How to use:

  • Squeeze extra moisture from your hair (using either a microfibre towel or old t-shirt!). Don’t rub your curls vigorously or anything, be
  • Spray the curl treatment all over your hair and comb through with a wide-toothed comb.
  • Leave on for 3-5 minutes and then rinse.

When to use the curl treatment:

Use it after deep cleaning or co-washing.

4. Curl balm

So now your hair is squeaky clean and nourished, it’s time to work some styling magic. Which means, drum roll please...it’s time for the Evo Liquid Rollers Curl Balm! This hair styling product is quite possibly one of our all-time favourites from Evo. Light, touchable and able to protect against frizz, this balm is what you need to use next.

As a light hold curl balm, this product will add softness, shine, improve manageability and will help to define your curls.

How to use:

  • Apply to damp hair from roots to ends.
  • Leave to air dry or use a diffuser.
  • Apply just to the ends during the week if your curls need a little extra moisture.

When to use the curl balm:

Since it’s a multi-tasker, you can totally just use Liquid Rollers on its own. But if you want absolutely gorgeous, stay-put-all-week curls, we recommend using it before the Total Recoil Curl Definer.

5. Curl definer

The final step in the curly hair routine, you made it! If you’ve gone in and prepped your hair with the curl balm, you now have an excellent base to start defining your curls. To make sure your curls stay in place not just during the day, but for the rest of the week, you need to ‘set’ them with a curl cream.

So, let’s turn to the Evo Total Recoil Curl Definer - a strong hold curl defining cream that will lock in your natural curl pattern and protect your hair from frizz (minus the classic crunch you get from gels).

How to use:

  • Apply Total Recoil to damp hair. Use your fingers to twist and twirl your curls.
  • You can then either air dry or use a diffuser. For a bit of added volume, try lightly scrunching your curls too.

When to use the curl definer:

This baby can be used whenever you want defined curls, so basically anytime! Use it on your hair washing day or for a mid-week refresh.

Some curly hair FAQ

How should you sleep with curly hair?

With a silk pillowcase or bonnet! Silk is much nicer on curly hair than standard cotton pillowcases, and you’ll definitely notice a difference when you make the switch.

If you have shoulder length or longer hair, put your hair up with a scrunchie into a “pineapple” ponytail. If your hair is very short, we recommend trying a silk bonnet.

How often should curly hair be washed?

Ah, the million dollar question. This truly depends on the products you’re using and your hair type. Some can get away with just doing a deep cleanse once a week, and others need to co-wash in-between deep washes.

Try each option and see how it goes for your hair - curly hair is truly all about trial and error!

How to blow dry curly hair fast?

When it comes to blow drying curly hair, the only and best answer is to use a diffuser. A diffuser is an attachment you can put on the end of your hair dryer and it will diffuse the air, so it doesn’t come out in one hot stream. Check out this video for a how-to on diffusing.
