Why You Need This Split End Trimmer & 5 Steps To Healthier Hair

Hands up if you've just taken some scissors and gone to town on your split ends? Or even worse, hands up if you’ve ever been bored enough to just split them down the middle? Either way, we’re sure that you’ll all agree that split ends are the most annoying thing about your hair. But what if we said that there was a hair appliance that could help? Luckily, the split end trimmer is here.

In particular, we’re talking about the Split Ender Pro 2. Let’s start off with: did you even know that there was a dedicated hair appliance for trimming split ends? Well, there is and now you can stay away from those scissors - or lighters if you’re the daring kind who takes to your hair with flames to singe away the split ends. Apart from being annoying, split ends can cause frizz and be a real roadblock when it comes to growing your hair and keeping it long beautiful and healthy.

The likelihood is that you’re just going straight to the hairdressers to get trims to solve this problem. But with the Split Ender Pro 2, you can give yourself a bit more time between salon visits but still have trimmed and healthy hair. Does this sound good to you? Then keep reading to learn more!

How this split end trimmer and a good routine will help

How does it work?

It’s pretty simple really - all you need to do is section your hair as you would when you’re styling it and the handy little split end trimmer does the rest for you. The trimmer has built-in ‘strand guards’ so you simply place your hair in the middle - kind of like when you’re straightening your hair - clamp down and run it through your hair. There are small blades at the bottom which snip the offending split ends.

To ease your worries about whether the trimmer will just lop your hair off entirely, let’s talk about the technology behind it. The Split Ender Pro 2 is fitted with the trademarked Surgy-Trim System Technology and unique patented hair plate, both designed to safely guide your hair strands in and out of those guards we talked about as the blades at the bottom snip the tips. It also has thick plastic teeth on either side to keep it tangle-free and help with guiding your hair as well.

How to use the Split Ender Pro 2:
  1. Make sure your hair is clean and dry (do not use it with conditioner or hair oils)
  2. For curly haired gals, make sure your hair is straightened first
  3. Section your hair into 3cm-4cm
  4. Clamp the split end trimmer over the section and run it through your hair
  5. Repeat 2-3 times for each hair section

Will it make my hair shorter?

The short answer is no, it won’t.

But we get where this fear stems from. We’ve all been to the hairdresser to ask for a small trim and ended up coming back with a full blown hair cut. Often though, it’s actually because the split ends are so high into your hair that the stylist most likely has to take that much off to get it back. But with this handy little split end trimmer, you won’t have to worry about that. The blades only snip any ends that are sticking up and leave healthy hair strands untouched.

Will it prevent future split ends?

Unfortunately not. A split end trimmer is a great temporary fix and way to extend that time between visits to your hair salon, BUT preventing split ends requires strengthening your hair from within and some maintenance along the way.

So to help, we’ve put together five easy steps to maintaining smooth, shiny, split-end free locks.

5 steps to prevent split ends

1. Use a reparative shampoo and conditioner

You know how we said that thing about repairing your hair from within? Well, it all starts with your shampoo and conditioner. We’ve said it time and time again, but try to go for an SLS-free shampoo. Sulphates can strip your hair of all it’s natural oils - it’s the price we pay for wanting that lather and squeaky clean feel - and consequently leave your hair dry and brittle. That’s where the split ends come in.

Instead, try something restorative like the Nak Structure Complex Protein Shampoo and complementing conditioner. It has nano proteins and deep conditioning plant extracts that infuses in your hair, repairing it and leaving it with a silky soft feel.

    2. Invest in a hair treatment

If you’ve ever read any of our blogs before, you know we love hair treatments. Like really love them. For an extra 10 minutes a few times a week, your hair can reap all the rewards - extra shine, soft to touch, repaired from within and just overall manageability. A treatment will often have active ingredients in it that a normal conditioner doesn’t so your hair is actually being restored and it’s also a preventative measure for split ends because they’re pumping your hair full of moisture.

We couldn’t recommend a treatment without mentioning Olaplex No 3 Hair Perfector. It finds broken bonds in your hair and cross links them to repair it. It’s the perfect solution for chemically  . Alternatively, we also love the vegan Davroe Protein Hair Reconstructor which also repairs and strengthens damaged hair from the inside out.

    3. Try a split end-specific product

Luckily for us, many of our fave hair care brands are also developing products specifically to treat split ends. Most of them will help seal the split cuticles, which ultimately helps A LOT with frizz and protecting your hair from further heat damage.

Some good ones to try are the Fanola Nutricare Restructuring Cream for Split Ends, which uses nutrient-rich milk proteins to seal the cuticle. There’s also, of course, the De Lorenzo ‘The Ends’ that our customers already love so much, which uses berry fruits and protein to moisturise, seal and promote shine in your hair.

    4. Protect your hair from extreme heat

There are so many factors that can cause damage to your hair - think UV rays, chemical treatment or using a bad shampoo - but the ultimate damage is really from daily hot tool use. And we get it, you need to blow dry your hair and we’re definitely guilty of straightening it too often as well. But that is 220 degrees of heat - no wonder why your hair is dry and splitting at the ends!

If you really want good results, give your hair a little bit of a break from the hair dryers. If not, invest in a really good heat protectant spray - we love the Moroccanoil Perfect Defense filled with argan oil and vitamins to re-hydrate the hair while protecting you against heat. The Evo Icon Welder is another great protectant option that also helps with volume and hold for the styling part.

    5. Use the Split Ender Pro 2

And last but not least - and now that you know about it - get yourself a Split Ender Pro 2. You should be seeing less split ends if you follow our steps but unfortunately, they are inevitable. So when the time comes, run this hand little split end trimmer through your locks and give yourself (and your wallet) some time between salon visits.
