How To Curl Your Hair With A Curling Wand - a guide

There isn’t anything better than having a head full of bouncy, voluminous, hair-flip-worthy curls (a fresh tan does come pretty close though). And with an amazing curling iron in your arsenal, a.k.a the H2D X5 Professional Curling Wand, achieving your #hairgoals is easier than ever.

Alas, there are still a few of us (🙋) that struggle to get the perfect curls every time. To help you out, we've collated all of the very best tips (and a quick step-by-step guide) so you can nail how to curl your hair with a curling wand. Why a curling wand? Well, curling your hair with a straightener is next level and we want to make things easy!

Ready? Let’s get into it!

First things first, you’ll need the perfect curling wand

Okay, so we might be a little biased on this one because we are obsessed with curling wands with interchangeable barrels - but you have to get yourself one of these.

Imagine a curling wand that can not only give you dreamy beach waves, but retro curls, tight ringlets and more! This is why we love H2D and their X5 Professional Curling Wand (for those of you that are rose gold obsessed, it comes in a pink shade too!).

H2D’s X5 Professional Curling Wand has 5 interchangeable barrels (32mm, 25mm, 19mm, 9-18mm, reverse conical) and is ideal for all hair types. It has a 360-degree swivel cord, heats up to 230 degrees and has a lightweight, ergonomically designed body.

With both microporous and ion field technology, this baby seals in your natural oils and locks in moisture. This means that when you use this curling wand, you’re getting super smooth, glossy curls that last all day. The tourmaline barrel helps with this too!

How to curl your hair with a curling wand: quick step-by-step guide

Before we get into our hair curling tips, we wanted to give you a step-by-step guide on how to curl your hair with a curling wand.

  1. Brush your hair and apply heat protectant.
  2. Section your hair using hair clips, hair ties or scrunchies.
  3. Take a 1 inch section of your hair. Hold the barrel of you the H2D X5 curling wand so it tips downwards (i.e. so it is parallel to your head and your hand is above your head).
  4. Wrap the hair around the barrel. Hold the hair for 3 to 4 seconds before releasing the hair from the barrel. For tight curls, let the curl cool down in the palm of your hand before letting it drop. For looser curls, let the curl drop straight away.
  5. Repeat for each section and alternate your curls. Make sure the sections of your hair surrounding your face curl outwards.
  6. Set your hair with hairspray and allow your hair to cool.
  7. Brush out the curls with a wide-toothed comb!

Okay, now let’s add in some killer products (and other tips) to that process and you’ll have J-Lo stage-worthy curls in no time.

4 tips on how to curl your hair with a curling wand

1. Prep your hair

Protect from the heat

This is something that we go on and on about because it’s so darn important, and we will continue to shout it from the rooftops: prep your hair with a heat protectant!

Curling or straightening your hair without a heat protectant is a big no-no. But, if you have completely singed your hair using hot tools, it’s worth investing in a hydrating hair mask to bring your hair back to life.

We’ve also just written a post about finding the best heat protectant spray for your hair, so we’ve done all the hard work for you!

Add volume with mousse or styling sprays

Clean hair, on its own, does not play well with curling wands. You might be able to get some initial curls, but they won’t last long and they’ll probably fall out within a few hours.

So if you want to know how to curl your hair with a curling wand and get those curls to stick, you need some styling products in your arsenal. We’re pretty big fans of the Evo Salty Dog Salt Spray (for beachy waves) and Schwarzkopf Osis+ Dust It Powder.

2. Use different barrels for different curls

When you’re learning how to curl your hair with a curling wand, you need to understand that each barrel size equals a different sized curl. To help, we’ve broken down the barrel sizes of the H2D X5 Professional Curling Wand. If you want:

  • Big, loose curls: opt for a 32mm or 25mm barrel
  • Curls that aren’t too big or small: try a 19mm barrel
  • Tight curls or ringlets: go for a 9-18mm barrel
  • Curls that are tight up the top and loose down the bottom: try a reverse conical barrel

3. Don’t be afraid to brush out your curls

Okay, so this might seem like the last thing you want to do after you’ve just spent an hour curling your hair - but hear us out. By brushing your hair, your curls will look less Shirley Temple and more beachy or Hollywood glam.

But do not, and we repeat, do not brush out your curls straight after curling your hair. Give the curls some time to cool down before you brush them. Then go in with a Tangle Teezer or wide toothed comb.

4. Set with hairspray

Hairspray can sometimes get a bit of a bad rap. While hairspray might remind you of 80’s hairdos, it’s actually come a long way since then.

After curling your hair (and brushing it out), spritz a bit of hairspray over your hair to lock everything in place. We promise you’ll still have a soft, bouncy texture.

At the moment, we’re loving the ghd Heat Protectant Spray and Tigi Bed Head Masterpiece Hairspray.
