If you’re like me and struggle to achieve that big, bouncy blowout look then keep reading, because we caught up with the one and only Peter Beckett, Hair Stylist and Creative Director of Haircare Australia to get all the tea.
Peter has extensive knowledge in the industry and has worked in hairstyling for the pages of Harper’s BAZAAR, Elle and marie claire. His impressive celeb client list includes Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding, Poppy Delevingne, Demi Lovato, and Behati Prinsloo and he has worked in New York, London and Australian Fashion week for brands such as Burberry to Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane. It’s fair to say he’s the expert! We were lucky enough to spend the morning with Peter Beckett and get the scoop on his favourite products in his kit for voluminous hair and his top tips for making volume last as long as possible.
Here’s what happened!
Colour WOW Dream Filter
We started off with a spritz of the Colour WOW Dream Filter. This pre shampoo spray-on treatment gently removes all the unwanted metals & minerals from your hair so you can keep your hair colour or highlights looking fresh and clean. My hair is a light blonde colour so it’s prone to showing discolouration from metals and minerals.
Peter told us “There are so many environmental factors that can distort or darken the colour of your hair so anyone who wants to keep their hair colour or highlights clean, then this a great pre-shampoo spray-on formula.” We saturated my hair with the dream filter and left it in for two minutes, yep only two minutes, which gave me just enough time to see what was trending on #hairtok.
Philip Kingsley Body Builder Shampoo & Conditioner
We then hoped over to the basin and used the Philip Kingsley Body Building Shampoo. The Trichologists on the Philip Kingsley team created this Shampoo to give those with fine, flat hair that movie star voluminous look. The Body Building Shampoo is a cocktail of hair loving ingredients, including frizz-fighting Copolymers and strengthening Keratin Proteins to give your hair long-lasting bounce and tame flyaways for a salon-worthy finish.
Following the Shampoo, we used the Body Builder Conditioner to further emphasise the volume in my hair as well as give it longer lasting moisture and shine. If you’re like me, when it comes to hair styling, bigger is better, but it’s not always easy to achieve. However, if there is a duo I would highly recommend to transform thin hair to appear thicker, it’s most definitely the body builder duo.
To use these products simply apply the Body Building Shampoo to wet hair and lather well with a gentle kneading of the scalp for 60 seconds (hello head massage!). After shampooing, gently work Body Building Conditioner into the mid-lengths and ends of the hair, avoiding the roots.
Philip Kingsley Elasticizer
After shampooing and conditioning it was time to move onto the Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer which might I mention is a cult favourite amongst the Oz Hair & Beauty team.
A little back story for you about the Philip Kinglsey Elasticizer: It was designed for movie star Audrey Hepburn. While filming Breakfast at Tiffany's she noticed her hair turning dry and brittle, so Philip Kinglsey and Audrey worked together to revive the movie star bounce and shine that she was missing after weeks of styling on set.
The Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is a hair mask that restores shine, bounce and elasticity and as an added bonus, it works as an intensive anti-frizz treatment. A common myth Peter debunked was that people think you should only apply this hair mask from mid to ends however he suggests from roots to ends for that head-to-toe bounce. This product also comes with a shower cap which was very stylish and keeps the heat in for maximum results.
“If you're looking to give your hair bounce and shine through strengthening and hydration, this is your go too. It’s a pre shampoo treatment and if it's good enough for Audrey Hepburn, it’s good enough for us.” - Peter Beckett
Colour WOW Xtra Large
Following all our pre styling products we then went on to use the Colour WOW Xtra Large, the game changer for voluminous hair in more ways than one. We’re talking bigger, better and more bombshell! Anyone with fine, thin, limp hair who wants to thicker, fuller locks expect major volume with this baddie. It didn’t leave my hair with that sticky, rigid feel that I sometimes get with other volumising products instead, my hair felt super luxe and glossy with an au naturel bounce.
To use the Xtra Large dispense two to three pumps worth of foam into hands and apply to damp hair from top to ends. Comb through to distribute evenly and style however you want. To style, Peter blow-dried my hair and clipped it up into a hair roller like style – without the actual rollers. He then used the CLOUD NINE curling wand in each section to reinforce the curl and get more volume on the root area – he described it as “slow cooking your hair so that each section can get a bit of the heat and the memory encourages the hair to stay in a little longer.” Once we had completed this process, he used the Denman D3 styling brush to spring out the curls. He suggests to only use the end parts of the teeth of the brush to create the bouncy waves.
To finish off Peter then spent a few minutes finessed my end look making me feel like I was the star of my own cover shoot *insert wind machine and flashing lights*.
And there you have it, Peter Beckett's tips and tricks to ensuring your hair looks big & bouncy. Time to add some new volumising products to the beauty cabinet? We think so! Shop the products Peter used on my hair at www.ozhairandbeauty.com
